How can I make a good first impression?

      bild-element_image

When people first meet, within a few seconds it becomes apparent whether they like each other or not.The first impression is usually crucial for how future interactions and relationships will proceed. This is why you should aim to be likeable right from the beginning.

One example in business: When a new project team is put together, it is best to work smoothly with colleagues right away. If you approach all team members with a positive attitude from the get-go, it can make working together much easier.

Perhaps you are asking yourself: How do I make a good first impression in order to win people over right away?

It is way easier than it seems. Here we offer a few tips on how you can make a good impression on others from the very first time you meet.

      1. The correct use of body language for a good first impression

Body language often happens unconsciously: you fold your arms in front of your chest because you might not know where to put them. However, the other person may interpret this as defensiveness or disinterest.

Pay attention to gestures and facial expressions, especially during the first encounter: an open body language, where arms and legs are not crossed, has an engaging effect on others. Sitting straight, making eye contact and a smiling signal confidence and trustworthiness. It is best to stand directly opposite the other person and listen carefully rather than appearing distracted.

      2. The perfect handshake

When greeting someone, a handshake can say a lot. If it turns out weak, you can seem insecure or lacking assertiveness. A firm grip is better, but it should not be too firm. It's also important that the palms are facing up when you reach out to each other, and that the handshake is even and comfortable for both of you. Look at the other person as you shake hands with them, say a few kind words in a friendly tone.

      3. Show respect with punctuality

It should go without saying that everyone should show up for an appointment on time. Being punctual shows respect and a sense of responsibility - you are showing you value other people's time.

Be careful not to keep anyone waiting unnecessarily. Unexpected traffic jams or not being able to find a parking spot happen to the best of us. In those cases it is important to show remorse for being late and apologize in advance for any inconvenience. That way you can make a good impression, especially if it's the first time you are meeting in person.

      4. Apearance

The clothes you choose are essential. Of course the outfit depends entirely on the occasion. For a formal meeting or a job interview, it is advisable to wear a suit or a dress - especially if you are in a conservative corporate environment. For start-ups, it can look a little different - the dress code is more layed back (blazer and sneakers) and confidence is key.

In general, you should prioritize a clean and neat appearance to make a good first impression while staying true to yourself as a person. If you don't feel comfortable in a tie - it shows, so make sure you keep it authentic.

      5. Positive attitude

Make sure you keep your spirits high when meeting new people - it is the best way to promote a positive atmosphere. Your enthusiasm should not come across as artificial, but should be genuine and natural.

For a corresponding inner attitude it can be effective, to remember experiences from the past that have made you happy. For example, if you passed an exam with flying colors or successfully delivered a presentation. This will trigger a feeling of happiness in you.

A positive attitude is an important factor in making a good first impression.

      6. Listen and pay attention

If someone only talks about themselves and doesn't let others speak, they are usually not the most liked. Listening helps build a relationship with the other person. It signals genuine interest in understanding the other person's thoughts and perspective.

      Conclusion

People form opinions about others within seconds and those opinions are difficult to be changed. Making a good first impression increases the possibility of an positive relationship.

Important elements in winning others over are being put together, having good posture, a positive inner attitude, and an honest interest in the others' views and opinions.

Always remain true to yourself - authenticity is always best.
